What is dredging?

Dredging is a key process for ensuring clean, safe, and functional aquatic environments. By removing sediments such as sand, gravel, and silt from the bottom, dredging helps improve water quality, deepen navigation channels, and protect the marine environment.

On this page, you’ll find a comprehensive guide to what dredging is, why it’s important, and how modern, eco-friendly techniques can help you achieve sustainable results for your dredging projects.

Why is dredging important?

Dredging is underwater excavation, which refers to the process of removing sediment from the bottom of, for example, lakes, rivers, and harbors.

Dredging can be carried out for various reasons. By removing sediment and pollutants, the process contributes to a range of benefits, from improved water quality to increased safety and navigability in the water.

Deepen watercourses

Dredging can be used to remove sediment that has accumulated in various waterways, harbors, and canals. This may be necessary to allow larger ships to pass through or to prevent flooding.

Protect the marine environment

Dredging can be used to remove contaminated sediment from the bottom of various aquatic environments, resulting in:

  • Improved water quality: By removing harmful substances that have accumulated in the bottom sediment, the risk of pollution spreading is reduced.
  • Support for biodiversity: The process creates favorable conditions for aquatic plants and animals, thereby strengthening the marine ecosystem.

Extract valuable resources

Through dredging, we can sometimes extract minerals and other natural resources from the bottom sediments.

Different types of dredging techniques

Dredging can be carried out using a variety of techniques, depending on the project’s objectives, seabed conditions, and environmental requirements. Some of the most common methods are:

  • Suction dredging
  • Bucket dredging
  • Ejector dredging

At Deep Ocean Solutions, we primarily use suction dredging. It is a modern and efficient dredging method that causes minimal disruption to the marine environment and can be used in all types of aquatic environments, regardless of depth, bottom sediments, or terrain.

Common questions about dredging

When can you dredge?

Due to turbidity, the County Administrative Board has decided that dredging is only permitted from September 1 through March 31. Dredging is not permitted during the rest of the year because of the risk of turbidity, which can negatively impact the aquatic ecosystem.

At Deep Ocean Solutions, however, we use a special dredging pump that does not cause turbidity during dredging operations. If you apply for a permit through us, there is therefore a good chance that you will be able to carry out your dredging project regardless of the time of year.

Can you dredge on your own?

Yes, you can dredge on your own. For smaller dredging projects, you must submit a notification to the County Administrative Board, which must approve it. For larger dredging projects, you need to have your permit reviewed by the Land and Environment Court. If you’re unsure, always start by contacting the County Administrative Board in the county where the dredging will take place. They can provide guidance if the scope of the project requires you to go to court instead.

Even if you’re allowed to dredge on your own, it’s usually difficult to carry out a dredging project without professional equipment or knowledge related to dredging and what to do with the dredged material once the project is complete. In the vast majority of cases, it’s therefore recommended to hire a company that specializes in this field.

Is it allowed to dredge without a permit?

No, you can’t. If you’d like to learn more about this, you can contact us.

Can dredging have a negative environmental impact?

Yes, dredging can have a negative impact on the environment. Among other things, dredging can cause turbidity, which can disturb bottom-dwelling organisms such as fish, crustaceans, and plants.

That’s why it’s important to work with a company that performs dredging in a way that minimizes negative environmental impacts. This can be achieved, for example, by using environmentally friendly dredging techniques. At Deep Ocean Solutions, we primarily use suction dredging, as it is a modern and efficient dredging method that causes minimal disruption to the marine environment.
