Choosing materials and lumber for docks
Val av trä
- RPressure-treated wood is the best choice!
- RWood class NTR/A is suitable for freshwater or along the Baltic Sea coast.
- ROn the west coast, where shipworm and ship borers are common, NTR/M-rated lumber is used to withstand these stresses.
Selection of fasteners
- RTo ensure long-term durability, stainless steel should be used, as it offers high corrosion resistance that matches the service life of the treated wood.
- RHot-dip galvanized steel may be an option for parts that are slightly less exposed, but in general, it is wise to choose stainless steel or materials with comparable corrosion resistance.
Building permit to build a dock
When you’re planning to build a dock, it’s important to be familiar with the regulations that may affect your project, particularly those related to shoreline protection, building permits, and notifications regarding water-related activities. Below, we’ll help you figure out where to apply for these and how the process works.
Coastal protection
Under the Shore Protection Act, you often need a permit to build a dock, even if you own the land. This protection generally extends 100-300 meters from the shoreline. You should always contact your municipality before starting a dock project to find out what regulations apply to your area and whether it’s possible to apply for an exemption.
If you’d like to learn more about how to apply for exemption or find out more about the rules for shoreline protection, you can visit the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, or the County Administrative Board.
Building permit
In addition to shoreline protection regulations, a building permit may be required depending on the size and purpose of the dock. A building permit is required to build, move, or modify a marina. For smaller private docks, a building permit is usually not required, but if the dock site is located within an area subject to shoreline protection, it is still necessary to apply for an exemption from shoreline protection. It is always safest to check with the municipality regarding building permits, as requirements may vary from situation to situation.
Notification of water activities
When you plan to build a dock, you must also submit a notification of water-related activities to the county administrative board, which will assess whether the location and conditions are suitable.
In its assessment, the county administrative board takes into account both the natural environment and the specific conditions of the site. The county administrative board bases its assessment on both public and private interests. Public interests may include the protection of bird and fish life, water quality, cultural heritage, and nearby swimming areas. Private interests may relate to the impact on neighbors and other dock owners.

Frequently asked questions about building a dock
How much does it cost to build a dock?
The cost of building a dock varies greatly depending on several factors:
- Size and materials: A small wooden dock is less expensive than a large concrete dock.
- Design: A simple floating dock is often less expensive than a more complex pile-supported dock.
- Site conditions: Hard-to-reach terrain or the need for dredging can increase costs.
Labor: Will you do a lot of the work yourself, or will you hire professionals?
Generally speaking, a simple dock can cost anywhere from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of kronor, while more advanced structures can cost significantly more. It’s best to get quotes to get an idea of the cost for your specific project.
How long does it take to build a dock?
The time it takes to build a dock also depends on the scope and complexity of the project. A smaller dock may take a few days to build, while a larger one may take several weeks or even months. Factors that affect the time required include:
- Preparations: Site preparation, ordering materials, and obtaining any necessary permits can take time.
- Weather: Bad weather can delay construction.
- Accessibility: Hard-to-reach terrain can make construction more time-consuming.
Can you build a dock without a building permit?
The rules for building permits for docks vary depending on where you live and the type of dock you want to build. In most cases, no building permit is required for a small dock for personal use, but it’s a good idea to check with your local municipality to be sure. For larger docks or docks in sensitive areas, a building permit or other permits may be required.
How do you maintain a dock?
The maintenance of a dock depends on its material and construction. Wooden docks require regular treatment to protect them from moisture and rot, while concrete and steel docks require less maintenance. It is important to regularly inspect the dock for damage and repair it as needed.
Can you build a dock yourself?
Yes, it is possible to build a dock yourself, but it requires knowledge and experience. If you’re unsure, it’s best to hire a professional.
How do you anchor a dock?
There are different ways to anchor a dock, depending on the type of dock and the conditions at the site. Floating docks can be anchored using chains and anchors, while pile docks are anchored by driving piles into the bottom.
How long does a dock last?
The lifespan of a deck depends on the materials, construction, location, and maintenance.
- Wood: 15–30 years (requires maintenance)
- Composite: 25–50 years (minimal maintenance)
- Concrete: 50+ years
- Steel: Very durable (requires rust protection)
Choose the right material, build it sturdily, and maintain it regularly to extend its lifespan.
